Becoming increasingly renowned for delivering intuitive security solutions for domestic and commercial clients throughout the UK, Huddersfield electricians Ti Installations are no stranger to the headlines.
And this month the team can celebrate further media coverage, this time in the UK’s leading recycling and waste management magazine MRW.
When MRW’s feature editor heard about the team’s intelligent ‘instant detective’ technology, Ti’s joint managing directors Kris Johnson and Mark Copley were interviewed about the functionality and benefits of this proactive surveillance solution.
Designed to tackle waste crime – not to mention unlawful activity on numerous other types of business premises and public spaces – this video analytics tool rapidly searches through hours of CCTV footage, to find specific evidence that the user requires. As Mark succinctly sums up: “It acts as another pair of eyes to protect valuable assets and safeguard profits.”

Q: What is your product/technology?
Ti Installations’ surveillance solution with ‘instant detective’ video analytics tool, supplied to the waste industry in association with AlienDVR.
Q: How does it work?
Having stored CCTV footage captured by security cameras, ‘instant detective’ software within a digital video recorder (DVR) intuitively searches through hours of old film in seconds, to find evidence of a particular criminal activity. The user simply selects the area where an incident occurred, and enters the timeframe. The technology then quickly identifies specific movement and activity in this zone, before loading relevant snippets of footage for the operator to play back.
Q: Where would it ideally be used?
In waste organisations at risk of criminal activity, for example the theft of valuable recyclates from skips. It is also perfect in busy spaces such as civic amenity centres which would otherwise be difficult to view in full, when replaying footage.
Q: How is it different?
Ordinary DVRs store an incredible amount of CCTV footage which can be replayed at length. However, because time is precious, this proactive technology identifies only the clips that need to be viewed in the event of a crime (or other incident) taking place. It acts as an intelligent yet cost effective management tool, for organisations that cannot afford or do not require a monitored security service.
Q: What benefits does it offer?
Business owners and site managers are able to determine what has happened on their property within seconds, without the need to trawl through hours of footage or employ someone to maintain constant surveillance. Furthermore, crystal clear, HD imagery and high quality recording capabilities ensure detailed evidence is obtained.
Given crime is a significant issue within this industry, the technology crucially helps protect waste organisations’ valuable assets, thus safeguarding their profit margins.
Q: Where has it been used?
At scrapyards, local authority recycling centres and private waste businesses, as well as wider commercial environments such as office car parks.
The cost would vary depending on the technology specified for the site concerned. A Ti Installations specialist would first audit the waste facility/premises, before recommending the best-fit solution in terms of the number of cameras, hard drive storage space, sound inputs and alarm triggers, for example.
Q: Any savings?
The efficient nature of this video analytics technology avoids the need to invest unnecessary hours trawling CCTV footage, freeing up employee/management time to spend on other more value-adding tasks.
This more targeted approach to footage analysis also heightens the chance that undesirable or unlawful activity is effectively combatted, potentially saving a company’s loss of materials, reputation or profits. In this respect, the technology could pay for itself within days of being installed.
Q: What is its life span?
The equipment is supplied with a two year warranty as standard, but could quite easily remain in full working order for over ten years.
Q: How is it future-proofed?
If a company’s current requirements and future needs are carefully assessed when determining the best-fit security system for a given site, this technology will prove a worthwhile investment for years to come. The technology is also incredibly intuitive for a surveillance solution in this price bracket.
Q: Anything else?
Smarter working practices have become increasingly important post-recession. This technology gives recycling firms an additional pair of eyes to help safeguard profits, without burdening the workload of an already busy employee.
